Assignment

SEMESTER PROJECT

SOCIOLOGY COLLECTION/JOURNAL

The project is due at the BEGINNING of class.  For every day late 5 points will be deducted (weekends included).  Refer to your calendar on you syllabus.

The objective of this project is to relate everyday items to lectures and readings.

Written:

  • “Collect” 10 items (see list below)
  • Write 1 page on each item relating it to a topic/topic(s)/theory
  • You do not have to summarize the item; this is an analysis of the topic at hand
  • Include the item along w/ your analysis
  • Use a minimum of 3 sources (not including your book) as part of your research
  • Staple everything together (no need to spend money on report covers etc)

Sharing of information:

During an informal presentation you will share with the class one item that was of particular interest to you.  NO LONGER than 5 minutesJ.  This will be conducted while sitting at your desk; no standing up in front the class!  Students who choose not to participate in sharing their project will have 5 points deducted from the project grade.

Items for your collection:

2 scholarly articles (refer to the social science databases in the library).  One must be from a Sociological journal the second can be other liberal arts scholarly publications in disciplines to include but not limited to:  Psychology, Criminal Justice, History, and Education.  One page of the article (likely the first page w/ the title, abstract)…no need to copy the entire article.

2 newspaper articles from the current semester

2 print advertisements from any magazine

2 folkways/folklore—these have more of an oral history twist, thus you’ll describe the item on one page and the second page must include:  from where did you learn of this story or tradition; what is its purpose or moral in your opinion; does it have special meaning to you…ideas: maybe take a picture of a relative telling the story, doing the activity etc…

2 wild cards—you can duplicate an above item; write about yourself (autobiography); use the extra credit assigned if applicable  (of course more in depth than the extra credit); discuss a movie that relates to Sociology; relate terms/theories!

Your project will include:

Cover page (name, subject/section, etc)

Item and write up

Bibliography/works cited page

= 22 pages total (10 written pages which is your analysis of the item + 10 original items or description + cover page + works cited)

You may be creative on the cover page, however the project must be written as any college paper would be written.  Refrain from using text messaging-type terminology, watch for overall editing.  While a few errors are allowed, too many can detract from your grade.  Incomplete submissions will result in a lower grade.  Late projects will be accepted w/ a reduction in points!

If you have questions as you go along, please see me…that’s what I’m here for!  This project is best done as you go along.  Don’t try to do it at the last minute.  Collect items throughout the semester then go through them, that way you have more items than you need!
